Sterile Filtration ‘Sterile Filtration’ will not give you sterile wine but is designed to remove all spoilage organisms from the wine. For this application, Amazon SupaPore VPW cartridges are ideal, typically rated at 0.45 micron absolute but some wine makers prefer to use 0.65 absolute rated cartridges for some of their more robust wines. As with Trap and Fine Filtration, the housing should be fully flowed, fully draining and suitable for CIP (Clean In Place) and/or steaming. The Amazon 62 Series and 64 Series (or, for smaller applications, the Amazon 51 Series) are ideal for these requirements, as are the Amazon 70 Series housings. Where Crossflow filtration (also known as membrane filtration, microfiltration or ultrafiltration) is used this stage can be used downstream as a ‘policing’ filter to ensure that, should bypass occur in the Crossflow system, your bottled wine quality is not compromised. |
